In the vast, beautiful, and occasionally infuriating world of Assassin's Creed Shadows, our intrepid protagonist must eventually cross paths with The Noble, a Shinbakufu target whose true identity is about as well-hidden as a sake bottle at a samurai party. This quest line is mandatory if the player ever wants to see the credits roll, so buckle up, sharpen those kunai, and prepare for a series of sub-quests that range from 'poetic' to 'punchy.'

The Rengakai: Poetry and Punch-Ups 🎋

First things first: the player needs to crash a poetry party. Yes, really. Head to the Saifukuji Temple, just south of Himeji Castle in Harima. This place is peaceful, so climb the pagoda, sync the viewpoint, and use Observe to spot the Renga Master. Then it's a guided tour of auto-following: meet young Ukita Hideie (remember him, he's important), chat with Kuroda Kanbei, and follow Hideie to the Rengakai meetup.

At the party, the player sits next to Ukita Naoie, a poet who seems harmless. But—surprise!—a band of shinobi attacks. Our hero must cut down three enemies (with allies helping, because teamwork makes the dream work). The bad news: the attackers kidnap Ukita Hideie. The worse news: the player now has to actually do some detective work.

The Scent of War: Gunpowder and Sneaking 💣

Next, talk to Konishi Yukinaga. He'll point the player toward a group of impostor gunpowder merchants. After a quick chat, the trail leads to Aga Hontokuji Temple, where three pieces of intel await. The area is hostile and heavily guarded, so Naoe's stealth skills get a workout.

Here's the thing: the game doesn't actually require a perfect stealth run. The three intel pieces (left, middle, and right buildings) can be grabbed even while being chased. The fastest method? Sprint to the middle building, spam roll dodge like a caffeinated ninja, grab intel #2, sprint to the right building, grab #3, and vault over the wall to safety. It's not elegant, but it works.

Losing Hand: Gambling and Chasing 🎲

Now the player must visit Tokubei's wife, Suzu, southwest of Himeji. Her house is in a hostile area, and three enemies guard her. Take them out, then Suzu asks the player to find her husband, who's been gambling away their life savings.

Head to the gambling cellar. It's hostile, but Naoe can take to the rooftops and use Observe. Drop down, find Tokubei, and he'll bolt like a scared rabbit. Chase him. Don't worry—he'll tire out eventually. After some dialogue, this sub-quest ends. The player probably needs a drink.

A Peculiar Guest: Kidnapping and Betrayal 🎭

With enough info, the player tracks the kidnapped Ukita Hideie to Junisho Shrine. A 'suspicious miko' turns out to be a shinobi working for The Noble. Defeat her (block blue attacks, dodge red ones, spam melee), then grab the item that reveals Hideie's location: Itatehyozu Shrine.

Find Hideie, auto-follow him to a priest, then auto-follow again until a cutscene triggers. Surprise! Ukita Naoie—the poetry buddy—is actually The Noble. He summons eight undercover shinobi to kill the player. After mowing them down, the real hunt begins.

Spring and Fall: The Final Showdown ⚔️

Talk to Kuroda Kanbei (west of Himeji Castle). Say yes to going after Ukita Naoie, and choose Naoe for the stealth section. At night, infiltrate the castle and take out three undercover shinobi:

  • Castle Swordmaster: Pacing on a wooden walkway. Use an aerial assassination from the rooftop.

  • Servant: By a peaceful pond. Hide in tall grass and assassinate.

  • Cook: Near a large tree. Stay elevated, then strike.

After that, open an interior gate for Yasuke. Switch to him, then take down six enemy shinobi (four in the courtyard, two in tall grass). Eavesdrop on Kuroda and Ukita Naoie, then watch Naoie retreat to the top of his tenshu.

Now, as Yasuke, climb the tallest tower. Kill everyone in your path—methodically, because getting swarmed from behind is a rookie mistake. Break open the barred door, keep climbing, and eventually reach the trap door at the top.

Boss Fight: Ukita Naoie 🥷

Here's his moveset, in a handy table:

Attack Type Counter
Three-strike melee combo Blue Parry and punish
Two-strike melee combo Red Dodge to the side
Smoke bomb (at half health) Summons two shinobi Kill them or ignore them

Honestly, for a Shinbakufu target, Naoie fights like a common grunt. Parry, dodge, chip away, and he'll surrender in no time.

The Aftermath: Kill or Spare? 🤔

The game offers a choice: kill or spare Ukita Naoie. Spoiler alert: he dies either way. If spared, he recites a poem for his son. Then report back to Kuroda, pass along the last words (if applicable), and this Shinbakufu quest is finally complete.

And thus, The Noble is no more. The player can finally put down the controller, stretch those thumbs, and maybe write a haiku about the whole ordeal. 🎉
